HOW IT WORKS

Translate by voice when typing is too slow.

Typing a foreign phrase on a phone keyboard is clumsy, and typing in a script you can't read is impossible. The voice translator skips the keyboard: your browser's built-in speech recognition writes down what you say, you can glance at the transcript and correct it, then our AI translates it into 50+ languages. Press Listen and your device reads the translation aloud, so you can play it to the person in front of you or practise saying it yourself.

FAQ

Questions about the voice translator.

How does the voice translator work?
You tap the mic and speak; your browser's built-in speech recognition turns your voice into text. That text is translated by AI into the language you choose, and you can press Listen to have the translation read aloud by your device.
Is the voice translator free?
Yes. Voice translation is free with no sign-up and uses the same daily allowance as text translation - 10 free translations per day.
Which browsers support voice translation?
Speech recognition works in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Safari on desktop and mobile. Firefox does not currently support the browser speech recognition we use, so the mic will not work there - you can still type and translate.
Can I speak English and hear the translation in Tamil?
Yes. Set the source to English and the target to Tamil, speak your sentence, and press Translate - the result appears in Tamil script. Press Listen to hear it; this needs a Tamil text-to-speech voice on your device, which most recent Android phones, iPhones and Windows/Mac computers offer or let you download. The same works for Hindi, Telugu, Spanish and many more.
Why can't I hear the translation in my language?
Read-aloud uses the voices installed on your device, so availability varies by phone, computer and operating system. If a language is silent or sounds wrong, check your system's text-to-speech or language settings and add a voice for it. The translated text is still there to read or copy.
The mic button does nothing - what should I do?
Make sure you allowed microphone access for translator.im (look for the mic icon in the address bar or your browser's site settings) and that no other app is using the mic. Also check you are on Chrome, Edge or Safari.
Can I upload an audio file or MP3 to translate?
No. The voice translator works with live speech from your microphone only; audio and video file upload is not supported. For a recording, play it back and dictate the parts you need, or type them in.
Can it translate a conversation in real time?
Not as a continuous two-way conversation. It translates one utterance at a time: speak, translate, listen. For a back-and-forth, swap the languages between turns.
Which languages can I speak?
You can speak in any language your browser's speech recognition supports - English, Spanish, Hindi, French, German, Chinese and many others. Set the source language to match what you will say, because recognition needs to know the language in advance.
