Character-by-character converters turn 头发 (hair) into 頭發 and leave 软件 (software) as 軟件. translator.im picks the right Traditional character from context and switches to Taiwan vocabulary and punctuation, so the result is ready for readers in Taiwan. 10 free translations a day.
Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau all write Traditional characters, but their vocabulary differs: Taiwan says 軟體 and 計程車, Hong Kong says 軟件 and 的士. Simplified and Traditional characters are not one-to-one either: 发 can be 發 or 髮, and 干 can be 乾, 幹 or 干. That is why tools that only swap characters keep making mistakes. This page targets Taiwan specifically: Taiwan character forms, Taiwan vocabulary and 「」 quotation marks.
Six kinds of mistakes, each with the Simplified source, the typical result of a character-by-character conversion, and what Taiwan actually writes.
Simplification merged several distinct characters into one. Converting back requires reading the context, and this is where character-by-character converters fail most often.
Getting the characters right is not enough. Mainland vocabulary reads as foreign to Taiwan readers, especially for technology, transport and everyday items.
These convert cleanly character by character but mean something else in Taiwan, which makes them the most misleading.
Common in mainland online and office writing. Taiwan readers understand them, but immediately recognise them as mainland terms. Replace them in anything you publish.
Swapping the noun is not enough; the measure word has to change too, or the sentence still reads as converted.
Easy to overlook, but Taiwan readers spot converted text instantly from its punctuation.
Some entries are based on these open-source projects and reviewed by hand: OpenCC phrase dictionaries (Apache-2.0)、speak-human-tw Taiwan localization guide (MIT)

Classic converters replace characters from a dictionary. translator.im reads the sentence first, then rewrites it the way Taiwan writes it.
Decides between 發 and 髮 or 乾 and 幹 from meaning, avoiding obvious errors like 頭發 or 幹杯.
Software becomes 軟體, not 軟件; taxi becomes 計程車, not 的士. The output follows Taiwan usage, not generic Traditional Chinese.
Quotes become 「」『』 and punctuation is full-width, ready to paste into Facebook, LINE, Word or a CMS.

AI translation handles most cases; these make the result more reliable.
One-to-many characters are resolved from context. With a full sentence the model can tell whether 发 means hair or development; a single word is easier to get wrong.
Brand, product and personal names are kept where possible. If you need to keep a mainland term (for example in a quotation), check those words after translating.
Contracts, legal and government documents may require 臺 and the Minguo calendar. Have someone familiar with Taiwan usage review them before publishing.
