ABOUT THIS PAIR

English ↔ German - the backbone of European business.

German is spoken by around 100 million native speakers across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, South Tyrol, Luxembourg and parts of Belgium - and learned as a second language by 30 million more. It powers Europe's largest economy, the Mittelstand engineering tradition, and a literary heritage from Goethe to Kafka. translator.im handles all of it - Hochdeutsch, technical jargon, formal Sie and casual du - with one quietly excellent answer.

WHY TRANSLATOR.IM

An English to German translator that respects both languages.

Built on frontier translation models tuned for European languages. No clunky word-for-word output - just German that reads naturally, capitalises every noun, and uses the right Umlaute.

Frontier model accuracy

Modern AI models that understand idioms, register and German compound nouns across paragraphs - not single sentences in isolation.

Context-aware translation

Proper Umlaute and ß

ä, ö, ü and ß (Eszett) are rendered correctly everywhere - no broken encoding, no 'ae/oe/ue' fallbacks. Output is ready to paste into Word, Pages or Notion.

Unicode-clean Hochdeutsch

Speak English, hear German

Switch to Voice mode and just talk - your browser's speech recognition (Chrome, Edge or Safari) types your English for you. Tap Listen to hear the German read aloud if your device has a German voice. Handy at a Bäckerei or a Bahnhof ticket desk.

TIPS

Tips for better English to German translation.

Three small habits that make AI translation feel hand-written by a native speaker.

  1. Choose Sie or du for the situation

German has two 'you': formal Sie (business, strangers, officials, anyone over ~25 you don't know) and casual du (friends, family, kids, most online contexts). Add 'translate formally with Sie' or 'translate casually with du' to your request - the difference is huge and German readers notice immediately.

  2. Give context for compound nouns

German loves compound nouns (Krankenversicherungsbeitrag = health insurance contribution). A full sentence helps the model decide whether to compound or split. Domain hints like 'legal', 'medical' or 'marketing' also sharpen the terminology.

  3. Specify the region if it matters

Hochdeutsch is the default, but Austrian German uses Jänner (not Januar) and Marille (not Aprikose), and Swiss German writes ss everywhere instead of ß (so 'Strasse' not 'Straße'). Add 'translate for Austria' or 'translate for Switzerland' if your audience is regional.

FAQ

Questions about English to German translation.

Is the English to German translator free?
Yes. Translating English to German is free - up to 10 translations a day, with no sign-up or account. Each request takes up to 5,000 characters, and the Image and Voice modes in the same box are free too.
How accurate is the English to German translation?
Output is produced by frontier translation models with paragraph-level context, so most everyday content is fluent and faithful Hochdeutsch. For legal contracts, medical records or literary work we still recommend a quick review by a German-speaking specialist.
When should I use Sie versus du?
Use Sie for business emails, customer-facing copy, government forms, older strangers and anyone in a position of authority. Use du for friends, family, children, most social media, startups with a casual culture, and people who have offered you the du. When in doubt in a professional setting, start with Sie.
Does it support Austrian and Swiss German?
Yes. The default output is standard Hochdeutsch, which is understood everywhere. You can ask for 'Austrian German' (Österreichisches Deutsch) for vocabulary like Jänner, Marille or Erdäpfel, or for 'Swiss German' (Schweizer Hochdeutsch) which uses ss instead of ß and prefers terms like Velo for bicycle.
When do I use ß and when do I use ss?
In Germany and Austria, ß (Eszett) is used after long vowels and diphthongs (Straße, heißen, weiß) and ss after short vowels (Kuss, dass, müssen). In Switzerland and Liechtenstein the ß has been abolished - everything is written with ss (Strasse, heissen, weiss). translator.im follows whichever convention your region needs.
Why are all the German nouns capitalised?
Because German capitalises every noun, always - not just proper nouns. 'The book is on the table' becomes 'Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch'. This is a hard grammar rule, not stylistic, and translator.im applies it automatically so your output looks correct.
How does it handle long German compound words?
German happily glues nouns together (Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft is a real word). The model decides between a compound and a hyphenated or split form based on context, frequency and readability - so technical writing stays precise while marketing copy stays scannable.
Can I translate English PDFs and Word documents into German?
Not yet - there is no PDF or Word upload. Copy the text from your file and paste it in (up to 5,000 characters per request, so translate long files section by section), or screenshot a page and use Image mode to read and translate it. That approach works well for manuals, contracts and slide decks for German clients.
Do I need an account to use the English to German translator?
No. There is no sign-up, login or install - open the page and start translating, with 10 free translations a day. For how translation requests are handled, see our privacy policy.
