ABOUT THIS PAIR

Vietnamese ↔ English - the language of Vietnam's next decade.

Vietnamese has more than 90 million speakers and is the largest Austroasiatic language by far. With Vietnam's economy growing at near-China speeds, a thriving Vietnamese-American diaspora of 2.2 million, and Da Nang turning into Asia's digital-nomad capital, demand for Vietnamese ↔ English translation has never been higher. translator.im bridges the two with frontier AI that understands family pronouns, regional vocabulary and Sino-Vietnamese loanwords - so the English you get reads naturally, not robotically.

WHY TRANSLATOR.IM

Vietnamese to English translation that actually reads like English.

We tune for fluent, idiomatic English output - not word-for-word transliteration. Family pronouns, regional vocabulary and Sino-Vietnamese loanwords are handled the way a bilingual person would.

Pronoun-aware output

Vietnamese kinship pronouns (anh, chị, em, cô, chú, bác) don't map to a single 'you' in English. The model reads the relationship and chooses natural English equivalents instead of awkward literal translations.

Native-sounding English

Tone marks preserved on input

Paste Vietnamese with full diacritics and the model reads every tone correctly. Even if your input has missing tone marks (telex or VNI half-typed), the model can usually infer the intent from context.

Diacritic-tolerant

Paste long Vietnamese text

No upload needed - copy Vietnamese SOPs, supplier specs or emails and paste up to 5,000 characters per request. Paragraph breaks stay in place, so long passages read back in order.

Up to 5,000 characters

OCR for Vietnamese text in images

Upload a photo or screenshot of a sign, slide, menu or government form. OCR runs in your browser, you check the recognised Vietnamese text, then read it in English. Works best on clear print.

In-browser OCR

TIPS

Tips for better Vietnamese to English translation.

Small framing choices that get noticeably better English output.

  1. Keep every tone mark in your input

Vietnamese meaning lives in the diacritics: ma, má, mà, mả, mã and mạ are six different words. Always paste Vietnamese with full tone marks (chữ Quốc ngữ as written) - the model reads the tones to disambiguate, and accuracy drops sharply on un-toned input.

  2. Send full paragraphs, not orphan lines

Vietnamese often drops subjects and relies on kinship pronouns that carry social context. A full paragraph gives the model enough to choose the right English pronoun, tense and tone.

  3. Mention the audience or tone

Add 'translate for a business email' or 'translate as a casual friend message' before pasting your Vietnamese - the English output will match that register, whether it's a factory SOP or a Tết greeting to your cousin.

FAQ

Questions about Vietnamese to English translation.

Is the Vietnamese to English translator free?
Yes. Translating Vietnamese to English is free for everyday use - 10 translations a day, no sign-up. Paste up to 5,000 characters per request, or use Image mode to read Vietnamese text from a photo or screenshot.
How accurate is Vietnamese to English translation?
Output uses frontier translation models with paragraph-level context, which handles most everyday content - manufacturing docs, news articles, family messages, school essays - very well. For high-stakes legal, medical or literary work we still recommend a human review.
Do I need to type all the tone marks?
Strongly recommended. Vietnamese tone marks (à á ả ã ạ) are not decoration - they carry meaning. 'Ma' alone can mean ghost, mom, but, tomb, horse or rice seedling depending on the tone. The model can sometimes infer untoned input from context, but accuracy is meaningfully better when you paste fully diacritic-marked text.
Does it understand both Northern and Southern Vietnamese?
Yes. The model recognises Hanoi and Saigon vocabulary differences (e.g. 'dứa' Northern vs. 'thơm' Southern for pineapple; 'vâng' Northern vs. 'dạ' Southern for polite yes), as well as Central dialects from Huế and Da Nang. English output is the same regardless of dialect - the model normalises meaning, not accent.
Is Vietnamese related to Chinese?
No. Vietnamese belongs to the Austroasiatic (Mon-Khmer) family - related to Khmer, not to Mandarin. A thousand years of Chinese cultural influence did leave a large layer of Sino-Vietnamese (Hán-Việt) vocabulary, especially in formal and technical words, but the grammar, sound system and core lexicon are unrelated to Chinese. The model handles both native and Hán-Việt vocabulary naturally.
What about chữ Nôm and chữ Hán - the old scripts?
Modern Vietnamese is written exclusively in chữ Quốc ngữ, the Latin-based alphabet introduced by Portuguese and French Jesuit missionaries in the 17th century and adopted nationally in the 20th. The older chữ Nôm (vernacular Chinese-derived characters) and chữ Hán (classical Chinese) are now studied mainly by historians. translator.im is built for chữ Quốc ngữ.
Can I translate Vietnamese PDFs and DOCX files into English?
Not yet - there is no file upload. Copy the Vietnamese text out of the PDF or Word file and paste it in (up to 5,000 characters per request, so work section by section), or screenshot a page and use Image mode to read and translate it. That approach works well for factory SOPs, immigration paperwork and academic theses.
Can I translate Vietnamese text from a photo or screenshot?
Yes. Switch to Image mode and upload, drop or paste a photo or screenshot (PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF or BMP). The Vietnamese text is recognised right in your browser, you can fix any misread words, and then you get the English translation as text. Handy for restaurant menus, street signs, government forms and product packaging. Clear printed text works best; handwriting and decorative fonts are hit-and-miss.
Can I translate Vietnamese into other languages?
Yes. Vietnamese can be translated into any of the 50+ languages in our main translator - including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Khmer, Thai, Spanish and French.
