WHY TRANSLATOR.IM

An English to Vietnamese translator that respects every tone mark.

Built on frontier translation models tuned for Southeast Asian languages. No missing diacritics, no Northern-only output - Vietnamese that reads naturally in both Hanoi and Saigon.

Frontier model accuracy

Modern AI models that understand register, family pronouns (anh/chị/em/cô/chú) and context across paragraphs - not single sentences in isolation.

Context-aware translation

Every tone mark, every time

All six Vietnamese tones (à á ả ã ạ) and vowel modifiers (ă â ê ô ơ ư đ) render perfectly. Output is Unicode-clean and ready to paste into Word, Pages, Notion or InDesign without a single broken character.

Full Unicode diacritics

TIPS

Tips for better English to Vietnamese translation.

Three small habits that make AI Vietnamese feel hand-written.

  1. Trust the tone marks - they change everything

In Vietnamese, the same syllable carries completely different meanings depending on the tone: ma (ghost), má (mom), mà (but), mả (tomb), mã (horse), mạ (rice seedling). translator.im always outputs the correct diacritics, so resist the urge to strip them when copying - the meaning lives in the marks.

  2. Tell the model who you're talking to

Vietnamese uses age- and relationship-based pronouns instead of a single 'you'. Add context like 'translate for a younger sister' or 'translate as a business email' so the model picks anh/chị/em/cô/chú correctly - the difference between warmth and rudeness.

  3. Specify Northern or Southern if it matters

Hanoi and Saigon Vietnamese share a writing system but diverge in vocabulary and feel. Prefix with 'translate in Southern Vietnamese' or 'use Hanoi dialect' if your audience is regional - useful for marketing copy and voice-over scripts.

FAQ

Questions about English to Vietnamese translation.

Is the English to Vietnamese translator free?
Yes. Translating English to Vietnamese is free - up to 10 translations a day, with no sign-up or account. Each request takes up to 5,000 characters, and the Image and Voice modes in the same box are free too.
How accurate is the English to Vietnamese translation?
Output is produced by frontier translation models with paragraph-level context, so most everyday content - emails, product copy, manufacturing docs, family messages - is fluent and faithful. For legal, medical or literary content we recommend a quick review by a Vietnamese speaker.
Does it preserve all the Vietnamese tone marks and diacritics?
Yes. All six tones (à á ả ã ạ) and vowel modifiers (ă â ê ô ơ ư đ) are output as proper Unicode characters - never stripped, never substituted. You can copy and paste straight into Word, Google Docs, Notion, Slack or any modern app and every mark will land in the right place.
Does it speak Northern (Hanoi) or Southern (Saigon) Vietnamese?
By default it produces neutral, written Vietnamese that reads well to both Northerners and Southerners. If you need a regional flavour, add 'translate in Southern Vietnamese' (e.g. 'thơm' for pineapple instead of 'dứa', 'dạ' for polite yes) or 'use Hanoi/Northern dialect' to your request.
Is Vietnamese related to Chinese?
No - Vietnamese belongs to the Austroasiatic (Mon-Khmer) family, the same family as Khmer. It does have many Sino-Vietnamese loanwords from a thousand years of cultural contact, but its grammar and core vocabulary are unrelated to Chinese. The model handles both native Vietnamese and Hán-derived vocabulary naturally.
What about chữ Nôm or chữ Hán - the old Vietnamese scripts?
Modern Vietnamese is written exclusively in chữ Quốc ngữ, the Latin-based alphabet developed by Portuguese and French Jesuit missionaries in the 17th century. The older chữ Nôm and chữ Hán scripts are now used only by scholars. translator.im outputs chữ Quốc ngữ for all modern use cases.
Can I translate English PDFs and Word documents into Vietnamese?
Not yet - there is no PDF or Word upload. Copy the text from your file and paste it in (up to 5,000 characters per request, so translate long files section by section), or screenshot a page and use Image mode to read and translate it.
Can I translate signs and menus from a photo?
Yes. Switch to Image mode and upload, drop or paste a photo or screenshot (PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF or BMP). The English text is recognised right in your browser, you can fix any misread words, and then you get the Vietnamese translation as text. Handy for street signs in Hanoi, café menus in Da Nang and product packaging from local supermarkets. Clear printed text works best; handwriting and decorative fonts are hit-and-miss.
Can I translate from Vietnamese back to English?
Yes. Use our dedicated Vietnamese to English translator for a Vietnamese-source experience with phrases, tips and FAQ tuned for that direction.
