ABOUT THIS PAIR

Malay ↔ English - the working pair of maritime Southeast Asia.

Malay is the national language of Malaysia and Brunei, one of four official languages of Singapore, and spoken by around 80 million people across the region. English remains the global lingua franca for work, study and the open web - and in Malaysia, it sits alongside Bahasa Malaysia in offices, courts and classrooms. translator.im bridges the two with frontier AI that understands Bahasa Malaysia vocabulary, formal government register and santai everyday speech - so the English you get reads naturally, not robotically.

WHY TRANSLATOR.IM

Malay to English translation that actually reads like English.

We tune for fluent, idiomatic English output - not literal word-for-word. Particles like 'lah' and 'kan', formal government phrasing, and santai mamak-table speech are all handled the way a bilingual Malaysian would.

Idiom-aware output

Malay idioms ('seperti aur dengan tebing', 'bagai pinang dibelah dua') become natural English equivalents - not awkward literal renderings.

Native-sounding English

Bahasa Malaysia + Jawi input

Paste Rumi (Latin) or Jawi (Arabic-derived script) - the model recognises both and returns clean English. Bahasa Malaysia and Indonesian inputs are distinguished automatically.

Both scripts supported

Paste long Malay text

No upload needed - copy borang kerajaan, tender text or training notes and paste up to 5,000 characters per request. Paragraph breaks stay in place, so long passages read back in order.

Up to 5,000 characters

OCR for Malay text in images

Upload a photo or screenshot of a sign in Putrajaya, a halal label or a kedai runcit receipt. OCR runs in your browser, you check the recognised Malay text, then read it in English. Works best on clear print.

In-browser OCR

Formal & syariah register

Government circulars, school textbooks, halal certification and Islamic finance contracts translated into formal, citation-ready English.

TIPS

Tips for better Malay to English translation.

Small framing choices that get noticeably better English output.

  1. Tell us it is Bahasa Malaysia, not Indonesian

Malay and Indonesian share much vocabulary but diverge often - 'wang/uang', 'pejabat/kantor', 'awak/anda', 'bilik/kamar'. If your source is Malaysian, add 'this is Bahasa Malaysia' so the model interprets ambiguous words correctly (e.g. 'pusing' meaning turn in Malay vs dizzy in Indonesian).

  2. Send full paragraphs, not orphan lines

Malay often drops pronouns and lets context carry the subject. A full paragraph gives the model enough to pick the right English pronoun, tense and register - especially important for formal letters and government circulars.

  3. Rumi is easiest; Jawi works too

Default input is Rumi (Latin script) - the standard for modern Malay. If your source is in Jawi (Arabic-derived script, still used in Brunei official documents, religious texts and some signage), paste it directly - the model recognises Jawi and returns clean English.

FAQ

Questions about Malay to English translation.

Is the Malay to English translator free?
Yes. Translating Malay to English is free for everyday use - 10 translations a day, no sign-up. Paste up to 5,000 characters per request, or use Image mode to read Malay text from a photo or screenshot.
Does it understand Bahasa Malaysia and Bahasa Indonesia?
Both. The model auto-detects which variant you have pasted - 'wang' and 'pejabat' signal Malaysian, 'uang' and 'kantor' signal Indonesian - and translates accordingly. If you want to be explicit, add 'this is Bahasa Malaysia' or 'this is Bahasa Indonesia' to your input.
Can I paste Jawi script?
Yes. Jawi (the Arabic-derived script still used in Brunei official documents, religious materials and some Malaysian signage) is supported as input. The model recognises Jawi and returns clean English. Rumi (Latin) input is still the most common and the most unambiguous.
How accurate is Malay to English translation?
Output uses frontier translation models with paragraph-level context, which is more than enough for most everyday content. For high-stakes legal, syariah, medical or literary work we still recommend a human review by a qualified translator.
Can I translate halal certification, formal documents and government forms?
Yes. Halal labels, syariah-compliant contracts, borang kerajaan and JAKIM correspondence are translated using the formal register that international counterparts expect. For final official submissions, have a sworn translator countersign.
Can I translate Malay PDFs and DOCX files into English?
Not yet - there is no file upload. Copy the Malay text out of the PDF or Word file and paste it in (up to 5,000 characters per request, so work section by section), or screenshot a page and use Image mode to read and translate it. That approach works well for tender docs, training decks and academic papers.
Can I translate Malay text from a photo or screenshot?
Yes. Switch to Image mode and upload, drop or paste a photo or screenshot (PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF or BMP). The Malay text is recognised right in your browser, you can fix any misread words, and then you get the English translation as text. Handy for road signs, halal packaging, kedai runcit receipts and government notices. Clear printed text works best; handwriting and decorative fonts are hit-and-miss.
Do I need an account to use the Malay to English translator?
No. Just paste your Malay and translate - no account, no app to install, and 10 free translations a day. Our privacy policy explains how translation requests are handled.
Can I translate Malay into other languages?
Yes. Malay can be translated into any of the 50+ languages in our main translator - including Mandarin, Tamil, Arabic, Japanese and more, useful for Malaysia's multicultural communities and ASEAN trade.
