WHY TRANSLATOR.IM

An English to Malay translator that knows KL from Jakarta.

Built on frontier translation models tuned for Bahasa Malaysia - not generic Malay-Indonesian soup. Halal-compliant terminology, government register, and santai chat all handled correctly.

Bahasa Malaysia, not Indonesian

Output uses Malaysian standard vocabulary and spelling - 'wang' not 'uang', 'kereta' not 'mobil', 'pejabat' not 'kantor'. Set Indonesian explicitly if that is what you need.

KL standard by default

Speak English, hear Malay

Switch to Voice mode and just talk - your browser's speech recognition (Chrome, Edge or Safari) types your English for you. Tap Listen to hear the Malay read aloud if your device has a Malay voice. Handy at a mamak stall or a Grab pickup point.

TIPS

Tips for better English to Malay translation.

Three small habits that make AI translation feel hand-written by a KL local.

  1. Ask for Bahasa Malaysia, not Bahasa Indonesia

Malay and Indonesian look similar but diverge on hundreds of everyday words - 'wang' vs 'uang' (money), 'pejabat' vs 'kantor' (office), 'awak' vs 'anda/kamu' (you). Add 'translate to Bahasa Malaysia (KL standard)' if your audience is Malaysian or Bruneian.

  2. Specify formal or santai register

For government letters, contracts and corporate notices, ask for 'formal Bahasa Malaysia' so you get the polite 'anda' and full forms. For WhatsApp and social posts, ask for 'santai' (casual) and you will get the contractions and 'awak' that real conversations use.

  3. Stick with Rumi unless you need Jawi

Default output is Rumi (Latin script), which covers 99% of modern use - newspapers, websites, contracts. If you need Jawi (the Arabic-derived script still used in Brunei, religious texts and some Malaysian signage), ask explicitly for 'in Jawi script'.

FAQ

Questions about English to Malay translation.

Is the English to Malay translator free?
Yes. Translating English to Malay is free - up to 10 translations a day, with no sign-up or account. Each request takes up to 5,000 characters, and the Image and Voice modes in the same box are free too.
Does it use Bahasa Malaysia or Bahasa Indonesia?
By default, Bahasa Malaysia (KL standard) - 'wang' for money, 'kereta' for car, 'pejabat' for office, 'awak' for informal 'you'. If you need Indonesian instead, add 'translate to Bahasa Indonesia' to your request and the model will switch vocabulary and spelling (e.g. 'uang', 'mobil', 'kantor', 'anda/kamu').
Can it output Jawi script?
Yes, on request. The default script is Rumi (Latin), which is the standard for modern Malay in Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore. For Jawi - still used in Brunei official contexts, Islamic religious texts and some Malaysian signage - prompt 'output in Jawi script' and the model will return the Arabic-derived script.
How accurate is the English to Malay translation?
Output is produced by frontier translation models with paragraph-level context, so most everyday content is fluent and faithful in Bahasa Malaysia. For literary, legal, syariah or medical content we recommend a quick review by a Malay-speaking professional.
Can I translate halal certification text and formal documents?
Yes. Halal labels, ingredient declarations, syariah-compliant contracts and government correspondence are translated using the formal register that JAKIM, Bank Negara and Putrajaya expect. For final official submissions, have a sworn translator countersign.
Can I translate English PDFs and Word documents into Malay?
Not yet - there is no PDF or Word upload. Copy the text from your file and paste it in (up to 5,000 characters per request, so translate long files section by section), or screenshot a page and use Image mode to read and translate it. That approach works well for tenders, training decks and academic submissions.
Can I translate signs and menus from a photo?
Yes. Switch to Image mode and upload, drop or paste a photo or screenshot (PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF or BMP). The English text is recognised right in your browser, you can fix any misread words, and then you get the Malay translation as text. Handy for restaurant menus, road signs in Sabah and Sarawak, and product packaging. Clear printed text works best; handwriting and decorative fonts are hit-and-miss.
Do I need an account to use the English to Malay translator?
No. There is no sign-up, login or install - open the page and start translating, with 10 free translations a day. For how translation requests are handled, see our privacy policy.
Can I translate from Malay back to English?
Yes. Use our dedicated Malay to English translator for a Malay-source experience with phrases and tips tuned for that direction.
