ABOUT THIS PAIR

English ↔ Khmer - bridging Cambodia and the world.

Khmer is the official language of Cambodia, spoken by around 16 million people from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, Battambang and Sihanoukville - plus a substantial diaspora in Long Beach, Lowell, Paris and Sydney. Pairing it with English unlocks NGO reports, garment-factory specifications, temple tours and family WhatsApp threads alike. translator.im handles all of it - the Brahmic script, Pali and Sanskrit loanwords, and Cambodia's elaborate honorific registers - with one quietly accurate answer.

An English to Khmer translator that respects both languages.

Built on frontier translation models tuned for Southeast Asian languages. No stiff word-for-word output - just Khmer that reads naturally to a Phnom Penh reader.

Full Khmer script preservation

Khmer holds the Guinness record for the world's longest alphabet (74 letters) with complex subscript stacking and vowel placement. Every consonant cluster, subscript (ជើងអក្សរ), and dependent vowel renders correctly - ready to paste into Word, Pages, Notion or InDesign.

Unicode-clean Khmer output

Frontier model accuracy

Modern AI models that understand idioms, register and paragraph-level context - not isolated sentences. Pali and Sanskrit loanwords from Buddhist vocabulary are handled with care.

TIPS

Tips for better English to Khmer translation.

Three small habits that make AI translation feel hand-written.

  1. Tell the model which register you need

Khmer has four distinct registers: royal (រាជសព្ទ for the king and royal family), monastic (សម្ដីព្រះសង្ឃ for Buddhist monks), formal (for elders, officials and strangers) and casual (between friends and family). The same English sentence can yield four different Khmer translations. Prefix with 'Translate to formal Khmer' or 'Translate to casual Khmer for a friend' so the AI picks the right vocabulary.

  2. Write full sentences, not fragments

Khmer often relies on context rather than pronouns, and verb forms shift with politeness. Giving the model a full sentence - not just 'tell driver hotel' - lets it pick the natural phrasing a Cambodian speaker would use.

  3. Keep names and brand terms in English

Names of people, NGOs, brands and foreign cities usually stay in Latin letters or are transliterated. translator.im keeps them intact unless you specifically ask for a Khmer transliteration.

FAQ

Questions about English to Khmer translation.

Is the English to Khmer translator free?
Yes. Translating English to Khmer is free - up to 10 translations a day, with no sign-up or account. Each request takes up to 5,000 characters, and the Image and Voice modes in the same box are free too.
Does it render Khmer script (ខ្មែរ) correctly?
Yes. Khmer holds the Guinness record for the longest alphabet - 74 letters - with consonants that stack into subscripts (ជើងអក្សរ) and dependent vowels that sit above, below, before or after the base consonant. Our output is Unicode-clean and renders correctly in any modern font (Khmer OS, Noto Sans Khmer, Battambang and others).
How does it handle Khmer's formality registers?
Khmer has separate vocabulary for royalty (រាជសព្ទ), Buddhist monks, formal speech and casual speech - the verb 'to eat' alone has four different words. By default we produce neutral-formal Khmer suitable for business, government and respectful conversation. Add 'casual' or 'royal' or 'for a monk' to your prompt to shift register.
Is Khmer the same as Thai? They look similar.
No. Both scripts evolved from the ancient Brahmi script of India, which is why they share a visual family resemblance, but Khmer and Thai are entirely different languages. Khmer belongs to the Austroasiatic (Mon-Khmer) family - non-tonal, with very different grammar - while Thai is tonal and belongs to the Tai-Kadai family. Translator.im has separate models for each.
Why does Khmer text have no spaces between words?
Traditional Khmer writes words without spaces - spaces only separate clauses or sentences. Our model handles this correctly when reading Khmer input and produces standard, properly spaced output that Cambodian readers expect.
Can I translate English PDFs and Word documents into Khmer?
Not yet - there is no PDF or Word upload. Copy the text from your file and paste it in (up to 5,000 characters per request, so translate long files section by section), or screenshot a page and use Image mode to read and translate it. That approach works well for NGO reports, factory manuals and school materials.
Can I translate signs and menus from a photo?
Yes. Switch to Image mode and upload, drop or paste a photo or screenshot (PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF or BMP). The English text is recognised right in your browser, you can fix any misread words, and then you get the Khmer translation as text. Handy for temple signs at Angkor, restaurant menus, tuk-tuk fare boards and product packaging. Clear printed text works best; handwriting and decorative fonts are hit-and-miss.
Does it handle Buddhist and Pali-Sanskrit vocabulary?
Yes. Roughly 30 percent of Khmer's formal vocabulary is borrowed from Pali and Sanskrit, mostly via Theravada Buddhism. The model recognises religious terminology and uses the right loanwords when translating sermons, pagoda notices or ceremonial texts.
Do I need an account to use the English to Khmer translator?
No. There is no sign-up, login or install - open the page and start translating, with 10 free translations a day. For how translation requests are handled, see our privacy policy.
